Vanessa hasn’t been writing since she was six, nor does she consider herself to be a born story-teller. Yet readers everywhere clamour for her steamy stories and sexy excursions to the dark side of desire. So what’s her secret?
We caught up with the thirty-seven-year-old short-story writer at home and put the question to her - why do you write, Vanessa?
VdS: I started writing because I got so fed up of every book and movie featuring size zero heroines who were lucky if they were sixteen. We all lust at Richard Greer movies, but look at the infants they give him as leading ladies! And why do Hollywood actresses all disappear when they put on a couple of pounds or turn thirty-five?
I’m a big lady myself, as lots of us are, and I like having sex and consider myself to be sexy. Very sexy, if you must know, and I’ve never had any complaints from any of my partners when we’re under the sheets, I can tell you.
So, I started writing the stories I wanted to read, stories where my heroines are all real women. Some of them are big, some are small, but all of them are flesh and blood and they all want to take their sexuality out to the furthest limits and explore what they find when they get there.
I like putting older women with younger boys, I like putting two boys together even more (and just for fun I’ve even put two boys together while a woman watches in Step Mom). In short, my women do everything that male characters have been doing for years. Except, of course, I don’t have to call my men derogatory names in order to get off.
